Drinking Gourd
The Boys Vocal Ensemble is working on "Follow the Drinking Gourd" during their Friday elective class. This is a collection of short excerpts from their rehearsal.
Reciprocal Teaching
I explored unpitched percussion with the Second Grade. Their task was to organize instruments into groups (metals, rattles, woods, and skins). Problematize: One student stated that his instrument (tambourine) was made of both wood and metal. He was unsure which group it belonged in. Predict: The class made predictions as to which group the tambourine belonged in. Clarify: We discussed how it compared to instruments in other groups and determined it belonged with rattles.
Great Big House in New Orleans
The students learned an instrumental accompaniment for the song "Great Big House in New Orleans". They previously learned the song and dance. I broke down each instrumental part using body percussion and word cues. The body percussion directly related to how each instrumental part is played. Using aural and kinesthetic exercises, the students successfully learned and performed an Orff accompaniment for "Great Big House in New Orleans".
